BBC - CBeebies
One of the most interesting and challenging projects I've worked on to date, the re-design of BBC children's channel CBeebies. The target age range is 0-6 years old so the navigation and content had to be easily accessible for this audience while remaining user friendly for parents. The previous design was very much geared towards the parents, so the main goal was to make it a more fun and exciting environment for children and hopefully give them more independence finding their way around for themselves.
Housing content for approximately 80 programmes broadcast on the CBeebies digital channel and CBeebies on BBC2, it was important to keep the user journey consistent throughout. From past web stats, we know the main entry point was through "CBeebies Shows" so this area is given prominence in the top navigation. The characters shown here are easily updateable to change with seasons of priority shows.
There are 3 different types of templates for the shows landing pages -
Standard Show Page
Most shows sit within this template. The top area contains a carousel which animates through the various section content available for the brand, bringing these links above the fold.

Enhanced Show Page
Enhanced brands have a similar layout. All links are in the same position, however the carousel is replaced with an animation or video introduction of the show. When this is finished, the section links appear.

Immersive Show Page
The last option is an Immersive template. These selected brands are "skinned" to bring in the shows identity. All links are in the same place, but like the enhanced template, the top area contains an animation or video of the show, then reveals the content links. This style remains through the shows content pages.

At 6pm every evening, the top navigation turns from day to night to coincide with Bedtime Hour on the channel.
